Hearing loss, communication and language disorders are some of the largest and fastest growing chronic disabilities in North America. Once thought to be a sign of aging, hearing loss is actually found throughout all ages, with children having one of the highest increases in hearing disorders. In Canada, 23% of the total population has some degree of hearing loss.
The recent growth in these conditions can be attributed to a number of factors including an aging population, increased noise pollution, recent immigrants who have not had the benefit of quality healthcare, children born with impaired hearing or communication and language disorders, and as a side effect of some prescription drugs.
Did you know that certain sounds can cause hearing loss in as little as 15 minutes? Or that the volume at some rock concerts and using many household power tools can actually cause hearing damage? The harmful level is 90 decibels. Learn what sounds are above 90 decibels and take immediate action to prevent permanent hearing damage.
