Continuing Education for Hearing Aid Practitioners

As is the case with many professionals, continuous education is mandatory not only to retain one’s license to practice but also to increase one’s knowledge base, become familiar with new technologies, new products and procedures and also to refresh and reconsider one’s understanding of fundamental areas of practice.
This year, we were fortunate to hold our annual Western Canadian Symposium in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. It was wonderful to be able to enjoy a taste of spring and even see some daffodils in bloom.
The Symposium moves back and forth between British Columbia and Alberta every year, allowing hearing professionals to attend from these western provinces and even from across Canada.
This year we were privileged to have an esteemed panel of well-respected lecturers on many fascinating topics and representatives from many manufacturers to introduce us to their latest products.
Speakers included Clark Walker, MD, FACs. Dr. Walker is an ear, nose and throat specialist board certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. He was talking to us in great depth about the tympanic membrane (the ear drum), landmarks to look for and possible visual clues for pathologies.
Richard Tyler, PhD, M.Sc was also at The Symposium. Dr. Tyler was trained in Audiology and Psychoacoustics at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Iowa. His seminar overview was “Helping your Tinnitus Patients”.
Other speakers included the renowned Ted Venema PhD. and Chris Gustafson AAS, ACA, BC –HIS.
Manufacturers were also in attendance to participate in a large Expo to showcase and bring to life the latest in cutting edge technology, products and services to better assist our clients.
Symposiums such as this are crucial in providing a venue to garner needed ongoing educational hours, to enjoy some hands on with the newest products and also to reconnect with other professionals in the field and share knowledge and experiences.
This is a wonderful event to reenergize and come back to work ready to assist all our clients with their hearing healthcare needs and getting them back into life with better hearing and understanding.
It’s always good to be away, but it’s always great to be back.
