I am often asked, “what made you decide to become a hearing aid practitioner?”
Years ago, I was looking for a career change when a friend suggested I look into the hearing aid practitioner course. He knew I was a people person, and when I researched the course, I liked the idea that I would be able to help people hear better.
Over the years, I have seen all ages of people and all stages of hearing levels, and many of my clients have become like family. I often think of one particular lady that we will call Martha. Martha had a strong German background and lived with her daughter and son-in-law. When she started coming to see me at Living Sounds, she only wore one hearing aid and had started to withdraw from social gatherings, as she was embarrassed she was always saying, “pardon”. We discussed the importance of wearing binaural amplification when there is a hearing loss in both ears. She commented that no one had ever taken the time to explain why two hearing aids were so important.
A week later when Martha came in for her first trial period follow-up with binaural amplification, she was so excited and so bubbly because she was hearing her family and friends so much better. She was spending hours a day on the phone to family in Germany… to the point, she laughingly told me, her daughter would say “mamma get off of the phone”.
Unfortunately, six months later Martha’s daughter came in to tell us that she had passed away in her sleep. Her daughter thanked me for helping her mother with her hearing and said she lived more in the last six months than she had in years because she could hear better and could take part in conversation and life in general.
It warmed my heart to know that I had helped this wonderful woman thoroughly enjoy the last months of her life.
So this is why I love to do what I do – to help people just like Martha enjoy life to the fullest.
