Spring Hearing

Posted by Living Sounds

The time of year to start going outside and enjoying the warm weather has finally arrived – which also means weekend gardening, cleaning and renovating around the house is in full swing.

It’s important to remember that spring-cleaning and more time in the busy outdoors might involve some extra-loud sounds that could be damaging to your hearing over time.

Prolonged noise can damage your hearing. Even short time spans of sounds over 85dB may have impact the quality of your hearing -permanent hearing loss can occur within 15 minutes when exposed to certain sounds.

If you are exposed to noise above 85dB, you need to take immediate action to protect your ears.

Hearing loss cannot be reversed, so make sure you know what kinds of common spring-cleaning sounds reach dangerous limits.

120dB: Chainsaw, sandblasting
110dB: Leaf blower
105dB: Jackhammer
100dB: Lawn mower
95dB: Power saw
85dB: Vacuum cleaner
80dB: Washing machine
60dB: Dishwasher

To protect yourself, wear headphones or earplugs when you are performing your spring-cleaning in a noisy environment with sound levels that exceed 85dB.
